Bharatanrityam, also popularly known as Bharatanatyam, is one of India's oldest and most sacred classical dance traditions, originating from the temples of Tamil Nadu thousands of years ago. It is structured around the ancient treatise Natya Shastra.
Nrityam translates to expressive Indian classical dance with storytelling and communication.
The word "Bharatanatyam" represents an elegant synthesis of three vital elements: Bha (Bhava/Emotion), Ra (Raga/Melody), and Ta (Tala/Rhythm), culminating in Natyam (Dance).
The Arangetram is a monumental milestone. Translating directly to "ascending the stage," it represents the debut solo performance of a disciple after years of rigorous discipline, and signifies their readiness to perform and propagate this sacred art form independently.
The solo debut is not merely a recital, but an offering of gratitude to the Guru, local deities, and the audience, displaying technical stamina and pure devotion.
The internal state of mind or mood depicted by the dancer using facial expressions (Mukhabhinaya) and gestural narratives.
The unique melodic framework that sets the soul, atmospheric resonance, and traditional scale for the performance.
The precise metric rhythm cycles and patterns clicked out by the Guru using cymbals (nattuvangam) and the dancer's bells (ghungru).

Guru Srimathi Parvatha Chidambaram is a highly respected educator, director, and champion of Bharathanatyam based in Rochester, New York. She is the disciple of Dr. Padma Subramanyam (recipient of the Padma Vibhushan Indian national award and founder of the dance form known as Bharata Nrityam). She underwent rigorous training in the Bharatha Nrityam style of dance, graduating in theory, practical, teacher's training and Nattuvangam. As the founder of the Bharata School of Dance and Music, Guru Smt. Parvatha has devoted her career to performing, choreographing and teaching while maintaining stylistic rigor, and spiritual essence of Bharatanatyam. Understanding the intricacies of these art forms has also enabled her to explore beyond the confined boundaries of her traditional art forms.
Under her meticulous direction, students undergo rigorous and intense training that goes beyond mere physical posture; Srimathi Parvatha fosters a rich understanding of Sanskrit stotras, raga, thrithala (rhythm), and the ancient mythological epics that constitute classical storytelling (abhinaya).
She was featured as one of "The Changemakers" at the Rochester Museum of Science, which highlighted the actions of area women from diverse backgrounds who were innovators, creators, organizers, and leaders — whose life or work was transformative or impactful in ways that inspire and empower others to shape a better future.
"The relationship between Guru and Shishya (disciple) is the foundational cornerstone of this sacred art. Through years of patient, daily mentorship, Tejasvi has learned to translate dry mathematical rhythms into liquid grace, and simple expressions into deep, soul-stirring storytelling."

Tejasvi Vijay is a Pittsford Sutherland High School honor-roll graduate and a rising freshman in college. She has been learning Bharatanatyam since the age of 5 under the guidance of Guru Smt. Parvatha Chidambaram. It has been a journey of discipline and discovery. To Teju, dance is more than an art form. It has helped her understand Bharathiya (Indian) culture and Hindu heritage. Her dance school has enriched her life with amazing mentors and fun-loving and caring friends.
In addition to dance, Teju has been learning Classical Piano from Mrs. Susanna Adams, and has been recognized by the National Guild Auditions. She has also learned Carnatic Violin and Vocal from Dr. Veena Ganeshan for 10 years, and has performed in various cultural events in and around Rochester. Apart from music, Teju has played tennis on her school's varsity team for 4 years, helping her team win the Sectional Championships. She loves serving others, and won the President's Gold award for volunteering.
Tejasvi is extremely grateful to the Almighty to have this opportunity to share this experience with you. After years of hard work and dedication, her Arangetram will be a moment she will cherish forever, and she is excited for what's yet to come in her life with dance and devotion.
